You are part of the IOT!
The IoT stands for the Internet Of Things and if you own a device that connects to the internet, then you are part of the IoT! This is a good thing in many cases, but at the same time it can be rather scary and confusing. There are a number of malicious sites and people that belong to the IoT, and you have to be careful to avoid them. However, this is a tall task, and sometimes an attack will happen. That’s where digital forensics comes in. An intrusion on an IoT device falls under the classification of a network intrusion. Network intrusions are intrusions that happen over your digital network and can include anything from viruses that open doors for access to intrusions through your WiFi network. Digital forensic experts can trace back intrusions into your specific device all the way to the people that it originated from. For instance, if someone were to access your doorbell camera without your permission, it is possible to trace that security breach back to the perpetrator that caused it. Intruders leave behind a trail of artifacts that are traceable by digital forensics experts. Artifacts can be anything from specific code, bugs, and more. The capability to trace these artifacts can extend to any number of IoT devices, including anything else to do with smart home technology. Network intrusion tracing can also be performed on anything with a network by digital forensics experts.
